How To Use MCT Oil On Keto

AKA brain and body fuel! If you’re starting the keto diet, MCT oil is a great choice. Not only is it high in fat content, but it also has a variety of health benefits that make it an ideal addition to any diet. With its ability to help you stay fuller for longer and boost your energy levels, MCT oil is the perfect way to get the most out of your keto diet. But maybe you’re wondering how to use MCT oil on keto?

What is MCT Oil and how does it work?

MCT is made from coconut oil, it’s liquid and is usually tasteless. MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, a form of saturated fatty acids. When inside your body, MCTs create ketones. These are energy molecules that become the preferred source of fuel once you reach ketosis.

What are the benefits?

One great factor of MCTs is that they don’t need digestive enzymes to be broken down, they’re readily available energy once consumed. Having more energy is only one benefit associated with MCT oil, you will also experience better mental clarity. MCT oil contains fatty acids that have been shown to reduce the growth of yeast and bacteria. Overall, MCTs may have a variety of antimicrobial and antifungal effects, though more research is needed.

How much should I have?

If you have never had MCT oil before, start with ½ tsp per day and gradually build it up to a few tablespoons. If you get gastric upset or feel unwell after MCT, make sure you don’t have it on an empty stomach. MCT oil can be added to most foods in the Keto diet, it can be poured over eggs, into smoothies or feel free to mix it in with salad dressing, I pour it over my veggies at dinner!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Some people love MCT oil in their morning cup of coffee (aka Bulletproof coffee), this is a great way to start the day with a high fat intake for those who don’t usually feel like breakfast in the mornings! Although keep in mind that if you are on a fat-loss program you will want to wait until your first meal as MCT will break your morning fast.

Where Can I Get MCT oil?

While MCT’s are a component of many foods including coconut oil, palm kernel oil, butter, milk, yogurt and cheese, the most effective and easiest way to get your regular dose of MCT oil is by picking some up in liquid form from my clinic. This will make it a lot easier to measure the correct amount of MCT to suit your dietary needs and add to your usual keto diet foods.
