What are infrared saunas?

An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses infrared light to generate heat. The heat penetrates the skin, warming the body’s tissues and muscles. Infrared saunas are different from traditional hot air saunas because they emit infrared light waves, which are not hot enough to cause burns. Infrared therapy has been recognized as an effective treatment for pain relief and weight loss in recent years.

Infrared saunas give you similar benefits to a steam or dry sauna, but at a much lower temperature (40-60 degrees compared to 80-100 degrees) so they are much more comfortable to be in. Most infrared saunas are “far” infrared, but some saunas also have “mid” and “near” infrared.

What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

Because the safe wavelengths of light penetrate deeper into the skin, infrared saunas can be effective in removing heavy metals and toxins from the body.

During your sauna session, the light also creates a cardiovascular workout on the body which is why many people find they are a great way to aid weight loss. Improved sleep is another benefit too!

Infrared therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions including: arthritis, chronic pain, joint inflammation, muscle tension and spasms, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), migraine headaches, back pain, neck pain and more.

Far infrared

  • Increases your heart rate (equivalent to mild cardio)
  • Increases blood flow throughout the body
  • Can ease joint stiffness and alleviate overall body stress
  • Weight loss

Mid Infrared

  • Greater penetration into soft tissue
  • Decreases inflammation and pain
  • Expansion of blood vessels means improved circulation and greater weight loss
  • May improve neurodegenerative disorders and brain healing after injury

Near Infrared & Red Light

  • Targets fat cells directly
  • Encourages collagen production
  • Improves fine lines and wrinkles
  • Brain health (anxiety, depression)
  • New cell regeneration
  • Acne lesions
  • Speeds up wound healing
  • Reduce stretch marks
  • Improves sleep
  • Bone repair and growth
  • May improve hair growth

The infrared sauna is a great way to detoxify your body, relax your muscles, relieve pain and stress, improve blood circulation, lose weight and much more.

Are there other benefits to Infrared Saunas?

An infrared sauna is not only a great way to detoxify your body, relax your muscles, relieve pain and stress, improve blood circulation, lose weight and much more. When you sauna regularly, you are not just facilitating a good sweat. As someone who wants to make a positive change in your life, you’re investing in your health and growth as a person. Having a sauna presents you with an opportunity to create new, positive habits. You’ll find yourself drinking more water, being more mindful of the food you eat and the amount of exercise you do.  You’ll sleep deeper, and feel less stressed.

How long should an Infrared Sauna session last?

How long you should spend in an infrared sauna will depend on each person’s goals, however I recommend sauna sessions of 40 minutes with a temperature of 45°C – 60°C. Aim for two to three sessions a week but even once a week will give you great health benefits.
